i went to see beck last night, it was pretty crazy...
i convinced monica, naomi, and john to buy my three extra concert tickets.
we got to the venue around 3:30 (doors opened at 6:30) and there were only 5 people in front of us in line. when the doors opened we made a mad rush to buy t-shirts and potty and then we got a pretty good spot near the stage.
the first "band," (if you can really call them that, they were more like speed addicts with good editing software) was TV SHERIFF. they basically took clips from tv shows and such to make videos and songs. they didn't really do anything live, it was all pre-recorded electronic. obnoxious. dirty. they literally gave someone a seizure. . the clips were flashing really fast & were really bright, and suddenly, this girl behind us fell over and, yeah...it was kind of scary.
next was LE TIGRE. riot grrrl feminists with dance routines and drum machines. they were good. i'll post pictures later.
next was beck, and here's where the real story starts. he played a great set, did a wonderful job incorporating old & new songs, hit's & lesser-known. during the concert there was a wasted sweaty guy standing next to me and he'd decided to take his shirt off so his hairy, sweaty, back kept rubbing into my bare arm, yuck. and a bunch of people started a drunken dance pit and this one guy kept elbowing me. i could barely see, my ears felt like they were bleeding, and it was super hot, but it was wonderful.
at about this point monica tapped me on the back and said that the three of them were going to move to the back because it was too loud. i decided to stay up front.
after that beck played some acoustic songs while his band ate dinner on stage. he was beautiful, not in the attractive way, but beautiful like a child. he seemed holy. i was getting tired, and lonely without my friends. but when he was playing up there alone it was just one of those bittersweet moments where you feel wonderful, but also sad, because you know that soon you won't be in the moment, and it will just be a memory. that's how the rest of the concert was.
beck finished up with "e-pro" and everyone kept cheering. a minute later he came on to play an encore and he said "i'm going to bring some people onstage to dance." i was excited, i was wondering if he was going to pull people out of the crowd when i saw monica, john, and naomi walk on stage. i was like, "no way!" and thought i was delusional. then about 15 other people came on stage and they all started dancing. of course this type of thing would happen to me. i was half crying and half laughing at myself, just like when i saw "the notebook." beck even pulled out john and naomi to dance with him personally. i took some pictures of all of this but they didn't turn out that well. i had to be quick and sneaky though, i'd already got in trouble earlier on. to top it all off, when the concert was over and we were walking out, someone poured beer on me from the second floor balcony.
aww, shoot.
i can be as bitter as i want and kick myself forever, but the truth is that that was the best concert ever, and a large part of that was getting to see my friends on stage, dancing with a superstar genius. and they looked truly happy, and i knew that they were having fun. i'm just glad i played a part in their having that experience.
